The Problem
Malnutrition is known to be an underlying cause in 30% of all deaths of children under five. in Sierra Leone, child malnutrition remains an important contributor to under-five morbidity and mortality due to high susceptibility to infections and slow recovery from illness. Sierra Leone’s most recent Demographic Health Survey report showed only 7 % of children 6-23 months were fed appropriately based on the recommended Infant and young child feeding practices. In such context, addressing malnutrition remains a key priority for the Government of Sierra Leone.
WHI's Solution
In partnership with Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) and UNICEF, WHI has trained 2,000 Mother Support Groups (MSG) in northern Sierra Leone, providing forums for infant and child nutrition best practices. MSGs provide community sensitization and education on proper Infant and Young Child Feeding practices to women of child-bearing age, pregnant and lactating women and mothers with children 24 months and younger.
The Impact
With WHI’s support, malnourished children are being identified and referred for help, kids are accessing Vitamin A supplements, and deworming is helping more kids stay in school. In collaboration with the MoHS, WHI’s regular local radio discussions on maternal and child nutrition topics are reaching people across northern Sierra Leone with critical health information.
