Makomp-bana is a large rural village community located in the Kafalla section, Bombali Sebora chiefdom, Bombali District. It is part of the Temne tribe located 4 miles outside of Makeni along the Makeni/Mabguraka highway.

The community has select members who take active leadership roles. These are: the Section chief, village headman, Women leader, Youth leader, Religious leaders and society leaders. The village has three schools: two primary schools and one junior secondary school. Children attending the schools are drawn from both the community and the nearby villages. Students attending who graduate from Junior secondary can advance to senior secondary schools to Makeni.

The village has two churches, which are UMC and New Community church. The Wesleyan Church is working on establishing a church here as well.. There are eight hand dug wells around the village but only two working for now, the rest have dried up and others need repairs. Few locally built toilets around the village, some members use the nearby bushes as toilets.

The majority of the population are subsistence farmers while women are mainly doing petty trading to support their husbands in taking care of their homes. The youths are mainly engaged in sand mining to support their farming activities.

Faith Wesleyan Church began a partnership with the people of Makump Bana, Sierra Leone in the summer of 2014. Facilitated by World Hope International, Faith Wesleyan’s generosity has started Makump Bana on a journey to promote community leadership development, hygiene training and education, livelihood development, and spiritual growth in this rural village located in the Bombali District.

Agriculture

In 2014, facilitated by World Hope International, Faith Wesleyan Church’s generosity has helped the village to plant 2.4 acres of pineapple. In addition to the pineapple farm, the community also has a Mother Support Group Greenhouse, which is also supported by World Hope International.

In 2015, World Hope International supported the village to grow an additional 4.6 acres of pineapple. Makump Bana also is the site where World Hope International’s papaya nursery is located.

In 2016, 80 bushels or bags of peanut seed and 60 bushels of rice were distributed as part of the seed loans to community members. From the community, 70 families received two bushels of seeds – peanut seeds were exclusively given to women and rice to men as growing rice requires more physical work. All beneficiaries already have either rice or peanut farms and will use the new seeds to enlarge their farms. Preferences were given to members who have participated in the pineapple plantation.

Moreover, community members and farmers were trained in modern agricultural techniques. They learned about how to care for livestock and how to correctly grow and manage rice, groundnuts, cassava and potatoes.

Clean Water & Sanitation

In 2016, WHI drilled two water wells to provide clean and safe drinking water to the community. Also, WHI distributed 200 insecticide-treated mosquito nets to pregnant women, lactating mothers, elderly people, and other members in Makump Bana to help kill and repel mosquitoes carrying malaria, one of the leading causes of death in Africa.
