Village History
Mabum Station is a rural village located in the Tonkolili District in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. Limba and Themne are the commonly spoken languages.
The village has a primary school with an enrollment of 120 children ranging from grades 1 – 6.
Members of this community are both Christians and Muslims. The village has a mosque for Muslim prayers while Christians keep service in the village school classrooms. Even though there are two religions in this village, all members of the village live amicably and respect each other. They participate and collaborate in community development. This, they believe, is the only tool that will move them out of poverty.
Completed Activities & Impact
Agriculture
The people are predominantly subsistence farmers as the land is suitable for cereals crops, tuber crops and raising livestock. With assistance from their partners at Iowa/Minnesota District Wesleyan churches and in collaboration with World Hope International in 2014, the community members cultivated 4.5 acres of pineapple farm and has plans to expand the pineapple farm to 7 acres and also cultivate 3 acres of papaya. These two crops are in high demand both in the fresh market, as well as a source of raw materials for the Africa Felix Juice fruit processing plant at Newton.
Clean Water & Sanitation
This community has no safe drinking and no proper toilet facilities. The partnership has identified this as an opportunity to build new wells and sanitation in 2016.
